Car detailing in Stockport

The unit is on Riverside Trade Park off Green Lane in Heaton Norris, a mile north of Stockport centre and straight off the A6. Most of the borough is inside fifteen minutes, so the car comes to a lit, enclosed bay rather than being worked on at the kerb.

What Stockport does to paint

The A6 runs the length of this borough and it is the road most of our work arrives off. Wellington Road takes constant winter gritting, and salt thrown up on a dual carriageway settles where nobody washes — the back faces of alloys, the sill undersides, the lower quarter behind each arch. Left across a season it dulls lacquer and pits the face of a wheel.

The M60 does something different. Stockport sits on the junction-25-to-27 stretch, and a car that commutes on it picks up fine grit at speed on the leading edges: bonnet nose, mirror backs, the top of the front bumper. That is stone chipping rather than swirling, and polishing will not touch it. It is a protection film conversation, not a correction one.

The Heatons are their own job

The unit sits in Heaton Norris, one of the Four Heatons along with Heaton Chapel, Heaton Moor and Heaton Mersey. Within a mile the housing changes completely and so does the work. Heaton Norris is largely Victorian terraces and deck-access estates, so cars live on the street nose to tail and come in with door edge chips and the fine vertical scratches people leave squeezing past with shopping.

Push up into Heaton Moor and the houses are the grand ones built after the railway arrived, set back with drives and gateposts. Those cars are garaged, lower mileage and already looked after, and the brief changes from remedial to protective — coatings, film on the leading edges, keeping a good car good. Heaton Mersey sits on the border with Didsbury and Burnage and splits the difference.

Two-stage correction on a black Golf R. Under the lamps you can't find a swirl, and they showed me the paint readings first.

Ceramic on the new Model Y before it had done 50 miles. Clear about what the coating will and won't do.

They told me the Audi didn't need a full correction and saved me £300. That's why I'll keep going back.

Stockport questions

Where exactly are you, and is there parking?

Unit 14 on Riverside Trade Park, off Green Lane in Heaton Norris. Park directly outside the unit — it is a trade park rather than a high street, so put the full postcode in rather than the business name and look for the black Northline sign.

Do I need to be in Stockport for free collection?

Free collection and return runs to five miles from the unit, which covers most of SK1 to SK8 and reaches into Didsbury and Heaton Mersey. Beyond that we still collect, there is just a charge for the run, agreed before you book.

I park on the street — can you still coat my car?

Yes, and it is the better route if you have no drive. A coating has to cure somewhere dry and dust-free for hours, which a terraced street in Heaton Norris cannot offer. The car stays in the unit overnight so it hardens properly before it meets weather.

How long will you need the car?

A maintenance detail is a few hours. A full detail is a day. Paint correction with a coating is two to three days, because the paint has to be measured, corrected and then left to cure. You get the drop-off date and the day it is back when you book.

Is winter a bad time?

It is the best time. Going into a Stockport winter with the paint and wheels coated means the salt off the A6 and the M60 rinses away instead of bonding. Bare lacquer through January is what causes the etching we spend spring correcting.
