About Northline

You are handing over a car, often for two or three days. This page is the evidence that we are a real business that can put it right if we get it wrong — not a photo gallery and a paragraph about passion.

How this started

James spent several years around the motor trade before the detailing side took over. It began at weekends in a small rented unit while he was still working elsewhere, and it spread the way this work always does — friends, local car groups, and people who had seen a car come back looking like it had not in years. Inside a year it was full time.

We moved into the Green Lane unit in 2022, and what we have spent money on since says more than anything else. Lighting, coating systems, better equipment. Not more bays and a queue outside. The aim was never to become a high-volume valeting operation, and it still is not.

Why the unit matters more than it sounds

Detailing is mostly a fight against contamination and light. A coating that picks up one piece of grit while it is levelling has to come off that panel and go back on. Correction done under the wrong light hides the exact defects you are paying to remove until the car is outside in daylight. Neither is solvable on a driveway, which is why coating and correction work is always done here.

What we're insured for

Most detailing sites say "fully insured" and leave it there, which means nothing — there are several separate covers involved and plenty of businesses carry one or two. Here is exactly what we hold. Certificates are in the unit and we will show you them.

Injury and property

Public liability — £5m

Covers injury to a member of the public or damage to their property arising from what we do, on our premises or off it. Cover at this level is common among established studios and rare among one-van operations, where £1m is the usual ceiling.

Compulsory with staff

Employers' liability — £10m

Compulsory for any business with employees, with a legal minimum of £5m per claim. We carry double that. Non-compliance runs to fines of up to £2,500 a day, which tells you how seriously it is treated — and how worth checking it is.

Legally required to collect

Motor trade road risk — £100,000

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 any vehicle on a public road needs cover, and a business driving a customer's car needs it under a motor trade policy. We collect and return, so we hold it. A mobile detailer who only works on parked cars does not need it and usually will not have it.

Worth asking about

Vehicles in our custody

Road risk cover extends to customer vehicles in our possession, which is the part that matters while your car is here. Public liability alone does not cover damage to the vehicle being worked on — it is a separate question and worth putting to anyone you are considering.

Ask any detailer you are considering for the same list, and for the amounts. If they cannot tell you whether they hold road risk cover and they are offering to collect your car, you now know what to ask next.

Where your car is kept

A correction or coating booking means your car stays with us for two or three days. That is not a detail to gloss over, and insurers do not gloss over it either — motor trade policies carry storage and security conditions, and cover can be argued about if they are not met.

Vehicles are kept inside the locked unit while work is carried out, never left out on the trade park. There is CCTV covering the entrance and the working area, an alarm system, and controlled access to the unit itself. Customer keys go into a locked key cabinet whenever they are not in use — not a drawer, not left in the car, not home in somebody's pocket.

What we won't do

×

Unsafe or aggressive paint correction

Some defects can technically be reduced further, but doing so compromises the clear coat for no good reason. We will not remove paint simply to hit a percentage correction figure that sounds impressive on an invoice.

×

Guarantee every scratch comes out

Some have gone through the clear coat into the base coat or primer, and no amount of polishing brings those back. We assess each defect and tell you what is realistically possible before you book, not after.

×

Vehicles needing biohazard cleaning

For hygiene and safety, vehicles containing excessive biological waste need an appropriate specialist service first. We will point you at one rather than take the booking.

×

Work on several cars at once

Each booking gets its own slot. Running three cars through a bay in a day is how corners get cut and how the wrong pad ends up on the wrong panel.
